We had this little idea back in October...well, it came to fruition today at the Community Mural Paint Day! This was the first SKYPE artist/community residency done in Howard County. Howard County Arts council loved the idea of DLES Skyping famous artist and illustrator Rafael Lopez. His children's book "Maybe something Beautiful" How Art Transformed a Neighborhood, became a starting point as we developed ideas for this project. Rafael's skypes were insightful as students learned about simplifying images and mural design by seeing up close and personal his artist studio and process. 3rd graders were asked...What images provide HOPE for you at Ducketts Lane. Students voices were heard as they developed the imagery for this mural. Their voices were heard loud and clear as hundreds of students came to put their mark on the mural today. I am thankful to work with admin, teachers and students for having belief in this project. Thanks to neighboring art teachers, classroom teachers, businesses, my family, middle school and high school students for volunteering. It was evident today to all who attended, the Arts do in fact bring people together! The primary grades learned about LINES and DOTS as they were inspired by the "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds! The student's discovered that creativity takes courage, sensitivity and smarts! Each student made "their mark", a unique dot that was uniquely designed! Seen above is a 1st grader classes collaborative dot project! They explored gadget painting and oil pastels in a collaborative wall of dots! So COOL!

Watercolor techniques were used to display warm and cool color schemes. 4th grade was busy creating "Pet Portraits"! They learned how to draw cats and dogs, then integrated patterns within the bodies. Heather Galler was our contemporary art exemplar! 3rd Grade discovered landscape painting. Did you know that an effective landscape painting has a foreground, middle ground and background? Third grade surely does. Come see the beautiful landscapes hanging in the school. 2nd grade completed a highly organized art print of an owl. You wouldn't believe they learned two different ways to print in one artwork! They worked so hard on their printmaking activity. 1st Grade finished observation Pumpkin Painting! They mixed various hues of orange for the segments of pumpkins. They couldn't believe how realistic they turned out! Seeing is Believing! Kindergarten completed colorful tube sculptures and Toy Robots. Please look for these incredible artworks coming home soon!
